How to Spot Hail Damage on Your Atlanta Area Roof

Hailstorms are nothing new to homeowners in Atlanta and across North Georgia. We see them every spring and again in the fall, and the damage they leave behind is not always easy to spot. A roof can look perfectly fine from the driveway and still have damage that will lead to leaks within a year or two if it is not addressed.

Knowing how to identify hail damage protects your home, your wallet, and your insurance options. Here is what to look for and what to do about it.

What Hail Actually Does to a Shingle

When hail hits an asphalt shingle, it bruises or cracks the surface and knocks off the protective granules. The granules are what shield the shingle from sun, rain, and weather. Once they are gone, the asphalt underneath is exposed and starts to break down quickly. Hail can also crack the fiberglass mat inside the shingle, which is not visible from the ground but causes the shingle to fail prematurely.

Signs of Hail Damage You Can Check Yourself

You should never climb on your roof unless you are trained for it, but you can look for clues from the ground and around your property.

Check your gutters and downspouts. Dents in metal gutters or downspouts are a strong sign that hail hit hard enough to damage your roof too.

Look at your other surfaces. Walk around the house and check window screens, AC units, mailboxes, garage doors, and any painted surfaces. If hail dented those things, it most likely affected the roof.

Look at your driveway and yard. Shingle granules collect at the bottom of downspouts. If you see piles of them after a storm, your roof took a beating.

Check the attic. Look up at the underside of the roof deck for any new wet spots, drips, or daylight that was not there before.

Why a Professional Inspection Matters

Hail damage is one of the most commonly missed types of roof damage. Insurance adjusters look for very specific markers, and so do trained roofers. A bruised shingle that looks fine to the untrained eye can be obvious to someone who inspects roofs every day. The shingle mat can be cracked even when the surface looks intact.

This matters for two reasons. First, if there is real damage, you want it found and documented before it causes interior leaks. Second, most insurance companies have a one-year window from the date of the storm to file a claim. Missing that window can mean paying out of pocket for a roof that should have been covered.

What to Do After a Hailstorm

If a significant hailstorm comes through your area, here is what we recommend:

Take photos and video of any damage you can see, including dented gutters, screens, vehicles, and outdoor items. Note the date of the storm and save any local news coverage that confirms hail in your zip code. Then call a trusted local roofer to do a free inspection before you contact your insurance company. A reputable roofer can tell you whether you actually have a claim worth filing, which protects your rates if there is no real damage.
