What hail actually does to a roof
An asphalt shingle is a mat saturated with asphalt and covered in ceramic granules. Those granules are not decoration. They are the shingle's sunscreen, and they are the only thing standing between the asphalt and ultraviolet light.
When hail hits, two things happen. Granules get knocked loose, exposing the asphalt underneath. And the mat itself can fracture, a bruise you often have to feel for rather than see. Neither one opens a hole in your roof, so neither one leaks on the day of the storm.
What happens instead is that the exposed asphalt starts breaking down years faster than it should. A roof with fifteen years left can lose most of that. By the time it shows up as a leak or a bald patch, it looks like ordinary wear, and it has usually been far too long to do anything about the storm that caused it.
Signs you can check from the ground
- Granules collecting in gutters or at the base of downspouts
- Dents in gutters, downspouts, drip edge or roof vents
- Dings on your AC condenser, mailbox, grill or garage door
- Torn or pockmarked window screens and wraps
- Shiny black spots visible on the roof from a distance
- Splits or bruises on the ridge cap
Soft metal takes hail the same way shingles do. If your gutters are dented, your roof took hits.

- We get on the roof. Not a drive by, not a look from the yard. Every slope, every plane.
- We check the whole exterior. Shingles, ridge, valleys, flashing, boots, vents, gutters, downspouts, fascia, soffit, siding and windows. Hail does not stop at the roofline.
- We photograph everything. You get the pictures, marked up, whether or not you ever hire us.
- We walk you through it. In plain language, standing in your driveway, not in a sales presentation.
- We tell you what we would do. Repair, replace or leave it alone. Sometimes the answer is leave it alone, and we will say so.
How the insurance side works
If the damage looks like it warrants a claim, here is the honest version of what happens next.
You file with your carrier. They send an adjuster. We meet that adjuster on the roof and document what is up there so nothing gets missed or misread. Your carrier decides what they cover, not us, and we will never tell you a claim is guaranteed.
What we can tell you is that an adjuster who has a contractor on the roof with them, pointing at the actual impacts, is working from better information than one who does not. That is the whole reason we show up for it.

Hail damage questions homeowners actually ask
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
You usually cannot tell from the ground. Hail bruises the mat under the shingle and knocks granules loose long before a leak shows up. The clearest ground level clues are granules collecting in your gutters or at the bottom of downspouts, dents in soft metal like gutters, vents, flashing and window wraps, and dings on your AC condenser or mailbox. If you see any of those, the roof almost always took hits too.
Does hail damage always cause a leak?
No, and that is what makes it dangerous. Most hail damage does not leak right away. It shortens the life of the roof by breaking down the layer that holds the granules in place, so the shingle weathers faster from that point forward. The leak often shows up years later, once the damage has aged into something that looks like ordinary wear.
How long do I have to file a hail claim?
Every policy is different and you should read yours or call your agent. Most property policies do limit how long you have to report storm damage after it happens. Separately, the longer damage sits on a roof, the harder it becomes to distinguish hail impacts from normal aging, which makes documentation harder for everyone involved.
