A great deck starts long before the first board is set. Here is how we walk our customers through the planning process so the finished space actually fits the way they live.

Start with How You Want to Use the Space

Before we ever talk about size or materials, we ask homeowners one question. How do you picture yourself using this deck? Some people want a quiet spot for morning coffee. Others want room for the whole family to gather, a grill, a dining table, and maybe a hot tub. The way you plan to use the space changes everything about how it should be designed.

When you have a clear picture of how the deck fits into your daily life, the rest of the planning decisions get a lot easier. We have built decks where every square foot serves a purpose, and we have built large open decks where the whole point is to feel uncluttered. Both can be the right answer for the right family.

Look at Your Property First

Every lot in North Georgia is a little different. We have customers in the foothills with steep grade changes, customers in Cherokee County with mature trees right where they want a deck, and customers up in Big Canoe with mountain views they want to frame. Smart deck planning starts with the land you have.

We always walk the property and look at sun direction, drainage, sight lines, prevailing wind, and where existing doors come out of the house. A deck that ignores those things ends up too hot in the afternoon, too windy at dinner, or pointed at the neighbor's garage instead of the trees.

Think About Flow Between the House and the Deck

A deck that flows naturally from the inside of the home gets used. A deck that requires a step-down, a tight doorway, or an awkward turn often sits empty. We pay close attention to where the kitchen door, sliding doors, or great room exits meet the deck.

If you entertain, the path from the kitchen to the grill matters. If you have small kids, line of sight from the kitchen to the deck matters. We design with traffic patterns in mind so the space works the way real families move through it.

Decide on Size Before You Pick Materials

It is tempting to fall in love with a board first and figure out the layout later. We recommend the opposite. Decide what size deck you actually need based on furniture, grills, hot tubs, and walkways, then choose your decking material. That way you do not over-build or under-build for the way you live.

A good rule of thumb is to mock up the deck with stakes and string before construction begins. We do this with our customers when needed. Standing in the actual footprint changes how people feel about size, and it has saved a lot of homeowners from making a deck too small to use.

Plan for Features You May Want Later

Even if you are not adding a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, or a screened porch on day one, plan for them now. Reinforced framing, electrical conduit, gas lines, and water lines are far cheaper to put in during the original build than to retrofit later.

We routinely build decks where the homeowner adds a pergola, lighting, or even a covered roof a year or two down the road. When we know that is the plan, we engineer for it from the start so the upgrade is simple.

Choose a Builder Who Listens

The best plan in the world means nothing if your builder rushes through the design phase. When you sit down with us, we take the time to ask questions, sketch ideas, and walk you through the trade-offs. We have been building outdoor spaces in North Georgia since 2007, and we know a deck only delivers if the planning matches the customer.

Ready to Start Planning

If you are thinking about adding a deck, screened porch, or outdoor living space to your home, we would be happy to come out and walk the property with you. There is no pressure and no obligation. The goal is to help you understand what is possible on your specific lot and budget.

Pro Tips From Our Crews

• Bring out your favorite outdoor furniture during the design walk so we can plan around the actual pieces, not generic dimensions.

• Take photos of decks you like before the consultation. Visuals help us understand your style faster than words can.

• Note where the morning and afternoon sun hits the back of your house at different times of year.

• If you grill, walk through how you load the grill from the kitchen now and tell us where the friction is.

• Ask about utility runs early. Adding gas, water, or electrical conduit during framing is much easier than later.

One thing we have learned from hundreds of builds is that the planning stage almost never feels like enough time. Take the extra week if you need it. The deck you build will be on your home for the next 25 years and the choices you make in design rarely get changed once the first board goes down.

Common Questions From North Georgia Homeowners

How much time should we spend on planning before construction?

Plan to spend at least two to four weeks on the design phase for most custom decks. Larger or multi-level builds may take longer. Rushing this stage is the most common reason customers wish they had done something different after the deck is finished.

What if I cannot decide between two designs?

Bring both options to a second consultation and we will walk through how each one would actually feel to use day to day. Sometimes the right answer becomes obvious once you see them side by side. Other times we end up combining elements from each into a final design.
