Understanding Drip Edge

A drip edge is a metal flashing component installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof to direct water away from the fascia and into the gutters. It creates a small gap between the edge of the decking and the fascia board, preventing water from wicking back under the shingles and into the wood.

Despite being a relatively small component, drip edge plays an outsized role in protecting your home from water damage. Without it, water running off the roof can contact the fascia directly, accelerating rot and deterioration.

Why Some Older Roofs Lack Proper Drip Edge

Many homes built or re-roofed before drip edge became standard practice do not have this component at all. Some older roofs have undersized or incorrectly installed drip edge that does not provide proper coverage. During a Roof Replacement in North Georgia project, proper drip edge installation is always included in our scope of work.

Building codes in Georgia now require drip edge installation on new and replacement roofs, but older homes may be missing this critical protection.
