Fall Roof Prep: Getting Ready for Winter Weather

North Georgia winters are mild compared to the rest of the country, but cold snaps, ice storms, and heavy rains still take a toll on roofs that are not in great shape. Fall is the time to make sure your roof is ready to handle whatever the next few months bring. A little prep now saves a lot of problems later.

Here is what to do.

1. Clean Your Gutters Thoroughly

Fall leaves are a gutter clogging machine. By late October or November, gutters across North Georgia are typically full. Cleaning them out before winter rain and ice arrive is one of the most important things you can do. Clogged gutters in winter create ice dams, force water under shingles, and damage fascia.

If your home has heavy tree cover, this might mean cleaning twice in the fall. Consider gutter guards if you find yourself doing it constantly.

2. Check Downspouts and Drainage

Make sure downspouts are connected, clear, and pointed away from the foundation. Ground that stays soggy through winter freezes and heaves, which is bad for everything from sidewalks to your foundation.

3. Trim Trees Before They Drop Branches

Heavy ice and wet snow break tree limbs that were already weakened by summer. Branches falling on your roof during a winter storm cause expensive damage. Trim back any branches that overhang or hang dangerously close to the roof before bad weather hits.

4. Inspect Shingles and Flashing

Look for any shingles that are curling, lifted, or missing. These are the spots that will fail first under winter wind and rain. Flashing around chimneys, walls, and vents should be intact and sealed. If you see any issues from the ground, get a closer look from a professional.

5. Check Pipe Boots and Vents

Cracked or aged pipe boots are a top winter leak source. Cold weather makes the rubber even more brittle. Replace any that are showing wear before you have a leak.

6. Inspect the Attic

An attic check in fall tells you a lot. Look for any signs of moisture or staining on the underside of the roof deck. Make sure insulation is in good shape and not blocking soffit vents. Confirm your ventilation is working. A poorly ventilated attic in winter creates condensation that mimics a leak.

7. Make Sure Your Roof Has Ice and Water Shield Where It Counts

Newer roofs in our area should have ice and water shield installed in critical spots like along the eaves, in valleys, and around penetrations. This rubberized membrane prevents water from getting in if ice dams form. If your roof is older and was installed without it, that is something to ask about during your next replacement.

8. Prepare for Snow and Ice

Snow events in North Georgia are uncommon but they happen. After a snow or ice event, do not climb on your roof to clear it. The roof is slick and dangerous, and the load is rarely heavy enough to cause structural issues for a residential home in our area. If you see ice dams forming at the eaves or hear unusual creaking, call a professional.

9. Address Any Repairs Now

Any small repair you have been putting off should get done before winter. Small issues turn into emergencies in the cold. A repair that takes an hour in October takes a day in the middle of an ice storm and costs five times as much.
